Ingredients: how they work and what they do.

Water

  • deionized, sterile processed water,
  • is the primary ingredient in the formation of a cream that is fast penetrating and soothing.

Mineral Oil

  • provides a barrier of moisture on the skin and promotes wound healing,
  • increases the water content of the top layers of the skin,
  • forms an occlusive that slows the loss of water from the skin by forming a barrier on the skin's surface,
  • is a clear liquid that is used in a wide variety of cosmetics and personal care products,
  • rarely causes allergic reactions.

Glycerin

  • is an emollient,
  • also known as glycerol,
  • helps skin cells mature properly; healthy, maturing cells are vital to combatting conditions such as non-melanoma skin cancer and psoriasis,
  • promotes natural healing and sloughing of damaged cells,
  • speeds up the healing process, lessens bruising, and encourages tissues and cells to self repair,
  • improves skin texture and provides visibly healthier resilient skin,
  • is a humectant, meaning it attracts moisture to your skin,
  • softens and moisturizes the skin and decreases itching and flaking,
  • our cream has additional emollients (moisturizers): lanolin, mineral oil and silicone oil.

Glyceryl Monostearate

  • is an emulsifier and preservative,
  • is a surfactant used to keep emulsions stable and well dispersed,
  • occurs naturally in the body as a by-product of the breakdown of fats, and is also found in fatty foods,
  • is deemed safe for human consumption,
  • induces a dispersion of undissolved material throughout a liquid.

Polowax

  • acts like a "glue" to bind oil and water emulsions,
  • helps blend fats with water,
  • is vegetable based, non-ionic, and compatible with most cosmetic ingredients.

Silicone Oil

  • acts as a barrier and imparts smoothness and water resistance,
  • works to lower the transmission of water from injured skin,
  • forms a boundary between two imiscible materials,
  • imparts a non greasy feel and luxurious sensation of smoothness and silkiness.

Lanolin

  • relieves dryness, discomfort, roughness and itchiness,
  • plays a crucial role in the skin’s moisture control,
  • protects the skin against the ravages of environmental factors,
  • provides exceptional emulsifying and emollient (softening or smoothing) properties,
  • resembles the intercellular lipids of the stratum-corneum, the outermost layer of the skin.

Euxyl

  • is a globally approved broad spectrum preservative that is free of parabens, formaldehyde and isothiazolinone
  • is a liquid cosmetic preservative based on phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerine and has a broad spectrum of effect against bacteria, yeasts, and mold fungi

Aqua Ammonia

  • used to balance the pH,
  • balances the acidity to that of skin.

Carbopol

  • provides a light, non-greasy feel while aiding in establishing a protective barrier,
  • prolongs the effectiveness of the cream while providing a rich and luxurious feel.

Salicylic Acid

  • helps stop itching and burning,
  • chemically similar to but not identical to the active component of aspirin,
  • is a beta hydroxyl acid,
  • derived from willow bark,
  • is soothing to the skin and is an anti-inflammatory agent,
  • is used for its antiseptic properties, as well as a preservative.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Antimicrobial is a substance that kills or inhibits the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, or protozoans.

Bactericide is a substance that kills bacteria and, ideally, nothing else.

Fungicides are chemical compounds or biological organisms used to kill or inhibit fungi or fungal spores.

Deionized water, also known as demineralized water[2] (DI water, DIW or de-ionized water), is water that has had its mineral ions removed, such as cations from sodium, calcium, iron, copper and anions such as chloride and bromide. Water is very often used as an "ingredient" in many cosmetics and pharmaceuticals where it is sometimes referred to as "aqua" on product ingredient labels; see International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. This use again owes to its lack of potential for causing undesired chemical reactions due to impurities.

Emulsifier is an agent for forming an emulsion.

Emulsion is a mixture of two or more immiscible (un-blend able) liquids. Emulsions are part of a more general class of two-phase systems of matter called colloids. Although the terms colloid and emulsion are sometimes used interchangeably, emulsion tends to imply that both the dispersed and the continuous phase are liquid. In an emulsion, one liquid (the dispersed phase) is dispersed in the other (the continuous phase). Examples of emulsions include vinaigrettes, the photo-sensitive side of photographic film, milk and cutting fluid for metal working.

Immiscible means incapable of mixing

Occlusive means impenetrable and usually refers to an occlusive shield or film that is spread onto the skin to slow or prevent moisture evaporation. This shield or film is usually made up of materials, such as oils and waxes that cannot be penetrated by water.

Preservative is a substance added to protect, prevent or retard decay, discoloration or spoilage of a substance during storage or use.

Surfactants are wetting agents that lower the surface tension of a liquid, allowing easier spreading, and lower the interfacial tension between two liquids.
